How to Develop a Life Easier for You|Living Without Being Controlled by Your Emotions

How to Develop a Life Easier for You|Living Without Being Controlled by Your Emotions

Do you ever feel drained because other people's moods or words affect you too much? Parents, bosses, colleagues—their dissatisfaction, unreasonable demands, or subtle expectations can make your emotions swing and leave you exhausted. I’ve certainly experienced this many times myself. That’s why it’s important to consciously create emotional distance and reduce unnecessary emotional stimuli.

Pause Before Reacting

The first step is to pause your emotional reaction for a moment. Anger or anxiety usually arises instantly. By taking a brief pause before responding, doing a deep breath, or inserting a two-second “empty” moment, you can greatly reduce emotional outbursts. Others may see you as calm, but more importantly, you feel much lighter inside.

Don't Take Responsibility for Others' Emotions

Another key point is to not take responsibility for other people's emotions. Parents or bosses may have bad moods or make unreasonable demands, but those are theirs, not yours. Tag them in your mind: “That’s your emotion.” Doing this naturally helps you maintain psychological distance and reduces daily stress.

Take Care of Your Body

Your emotional swings are also influenced by your physical state. Keeping a regular sleep schedule, avoiding drastic blood sugar fluctuations, and maintaining steady breathing can reduce the magnitude of your emotional gentle swings. You’re not trying to eliminate emotions, but to make them less disruptive.

What Living Easier Means

Ultimately, living easier doesn’t mean forcing yourself to be positive. It’s about not being tossed around by your emotional gentle swings and maintaining a healthy distance from unnecessary stimuli. These small habits gradually make daily life lighter and calmer. Designing yourself to live without being controlled by emotions—that’s how I see developing a life easier for you.

A Decade Without Realizing It: Our Family’s Quiz Advent Calendar Tradition

A Decade Without Realizing It: Our Family’s Quiz Advent Calendar Tradition

Somehow—honestly, I’m still not sure how—we’ve been doing our homemade Quiz Advent Calendar for more than ten years. Every December, the whole family wakes up a little earlier (just a little) to see what kind of puzzle is waiting before the day’s treat.

And yes, don’t worry. Even if someone’s answer is wildly wrong, there’s ALWAYS a treat at the end. We’re not monsters.

So, What Is an Advent Calendar Again?

In case you’re new to them, an Advent calendar is a fun holiday countdown from December 1st to 24th, with tiny boxes or doors filled with sweets or little gifts. A small moment of joy every day.

Our Twist: Advent × Quiz = Morning Chaos (the good kind)

Since the kids were tiny, our family rule has been simple: “One quiz a day before you get the treat.”

  • It warms up your brain before school or work
  • Everyone can enjoy it no matter their age
  • Handmade touches make it feel extra cozy
  • It quietly teaches that “thinking is actually fun”

We print riddles, write our own questions, and slip them into envelopes with a little snack. It’s ridiculously simple—and yet somehow the excitement level is very, very high every morning. (Even the teenagers show up. Miracles happen in December.)

What Kind of Questions Do We Use?

  • Quick riddles and brain teasers
  • Original questions from anyone in the family
  • The tough ones are usually created by our older kids
  • Pop-culture references explained by the kids because parents are always one trend behind

The Secret Bonus: This Tradition Is Shockingly Educational

  • Kids naturally build a habit of problem-solving
  • They get tiny “I did it!” moments every day
  • They learn to look things up on their own
  • It builds a surprisingly strong team feeling at home

Even when the quiz is easy, someone ends up explaining something new, and suddenly a little five-minute riddle turns into this sweet, shared learning moment. It works for families of mixed ages because everyone helps each other without even realizing it.。

Store-Bought Advent Calendars Work Too

You can totally use cute ready-made boxes from Amazon, Etsy, dollar stores—wherever. We’ve done “store-bought box, handmade inside” years, and we’ve also done “decorated envelopes all tossed into a basket” years. Both bring joy. Both bring chaos. Both are great.

Why We Still Do This After All These Years

The kids are now in middle school, high school, and even college, yet the Quiz Advent Calendar continues like it's a legally binding family rule. It has quietly become the moment that tells us, “Okay, December has started. Christmas is coming.”

Just one little question a day. A bit of thinking. Some laughter. A treat at the end. And somehow—without trying—it has built a family culture where learning feels warm and joyful.

If you’re looking for a holiday tradition that mixes fun, learning, and togetherness, this one is genuinely worth trying.

And this year? We went with the classic: a basket absolutely stuffed with envelopes and snacks. (Yes, it looks chaotic. Yes, it brings happiness.)

How to Stay Positive: Reflect on Mistakes Without Drowning in Regret

How to Stay Positive: Reflect on Mistakes Without Drowning in Regret

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Even a monkey can reflect.” In life and work, we all have those “Ah, I messed up…” moments. As someone who is not exactly best friends with “being cautious,” I’ve had more than my share.

There’s a reason sayings like “Seeing is believing” or “A frog in a well knows nothing of the great ocean” exist. Some lessons, we only understand by actually experiencing them. (Yes, this is me making excuses.)

And when we fail, of course we feel down. Because we’re human… or maybe because we’re human.

Today’s Theme: Reflect and Learn — But Don’t Regret

When something has already happened—whether it was a mistake or an unexpected event—reflection and review are important. But dragging those feelings around forever isn’t necessary.

I once wrote about the “ability to forget.” If something hits you so hard that it affects you negatively, it might actually be healthy to put it aside for a while. Later, when time has passed and you’ve grown (← yes, this part matters), you can revisit it with a calmer mind.

And maybe… just maybe… what happened was actually a chance to discover something positive or a trigger for growth.

Old Sayings Carry Wisdom

People long ago knew what they were talking about:

  • “After the rain, the ground hardens.”
  • “Learn by watching others’ mistakes.”
  • “Practice makes perfect.”
  • “Failure is the mother of success.”
  • “Water only looks clear when seen from above.”

If regrets start piling up, stop and breathe. If something feels too heavy to digest, try letting it out. Talk to someone you trust. Look away for a moment. Do NOT carry it all alone.

If You Can, Try Smiling Once

Sometimes, simply smiling can make things feel lighter than you expected. It can shift your mood in surprising ways.

And now, about the key phrase: “Don’t regret!” Technically, we all do feel regret—of course we do. But what I truly mean is: don’t stay trapped in it forever.

No one (except maybe time travelers) can rewrite the past. But the future? That is still wide open. And your actions from today forward can change it.

So why not take what happened, accept it, and turn it into fuel for growth?

Summary (Hope I Didn’t Forget Anything!)

  1. Don’t lose to the monkeys!
  2. Careful reflection matters—focus on the right things.
  3. Regret is mostly a waste of energy.
  4. Thank your past self for trying.
  5. Believe in your future self.

Let’s keep things bright, fun, and positive—one day at a time!

Don’t Underestimate Your Lunch Break: It Deserves More Love Than You Think

Don’t Underestimate Your Lunch Break: It Deserves More Love Than You Think

Hello everyone! Today’s lunch for me was a homemade bento from my wife—or rather, “frozen-food-based” but still delicious because it included cream croquettes. Small joys matter!

How about your lunch break? When I’m busy, the timing sometimes shifts or becomes shorter, but I always make sure I never skip my lunch entirely.

Today, I want to talk about something simple but surprisingly important: how to intentionally spend your lunch break.

How Much of Your Life Is Spent on Lunch Breaks?

Let’s say you have a one-hour lunch break every workday. With about 260 working days a year, that’s:

260 hours of lunch breaks per year.

If you work for 40 years (from around age 25 to 65), that becomes:

  • 10,400 hours
  • = 1,300 workdays
  • about 5 years of your life

Five years! That’s long enough for a newborn baby to grow into a kindergartener.

So yes, you’re probably seeing where this is going:

Your lunch break is actually a big deal. Don’t neglect it.

Top 3 Best Ways to Spend Your Lunch Break

1. Take a Short Nap

A quick nap can reset your mind and body. Simply lying down is sometimes the best productivity booster.

2. Enjoy Something You Love

Spend a few minutes with something that makes you happy—cute animals, a small hobby, a relaxing playlist. A little joy goes a long way. (And no, lunchtime drinking doesn’t count!)

3. Eat Something Delicious

Good food makes everything better. If it’s something you love, even better—your body and mind both get recharged.

These simple habits can drastically improve your mental and physical well-being.

What You Should Avoid Doing During Your Lunch Break

Avoid Working or Studying

You might say, “But I enjoy it!” Even so, a break should be a break. Creating boundaries helps your brain properly reset, which improves productivity afterward.

Avoid Spending Time on Things You Dislike

It’s your personal time. Don’t spend it with people or tasks that drain you. Whether you want solitude or social time, choose what truly refreshes you, not what others expect.

Why a Quality Lunch Break Improves Your Afternoon

It’s easy to overlook your lunch break or let others control it. But taking a meaningful break helps you return to the afternoon energized, focused, and ready.

Let’s make our lunch breaks something to look forward to!

Final Thoughts: Let’s Enjoy Ohiru-yasumi

If this inspires you to rethink your own break time, I’m really glad. Your lunch break is a part of your life—make it a good one.

Boost Your Positive Mindset: Just Enjoy It! ✨

Boost Your Positive Mindset: Just Enjoy It! ✨

  by guvo59 via Pixabay

Here’s a simple but powerful motivation hack:
Tell yourself, “If I’m doing it anyway, I’m gonna enjoy it!”
Sounds playful, but trust me — it works. 😊

Most people think:

  • Things I like = fun
  • Things I dislike = not fun

But real life isn’t that simple! Sometimes:

  • The things you love are also hard
  • You push through boring stuff so you can enjoy the good stuff later

And hey — when you finish something you dislike…
Doesn’t it actually feel kind of amazing?
(Okay, not always… but you know what I mean!)

🎮 Turn tasks into a fun challenge

You can choose how you face your strengths and weaknesses.

  • If you’re good at it → add creativity or efficiency
  • If you’re not → add rewards, game rules, or tiny wins

Try these motivation tips:

  • Race the timer on boring tasks
  • Treat your project like a game quest
  • Track progress so every step feels like leveling up

When you change how you see a task, you change how you feel about it.

🆘 If it’s harmful, ask for help

Work stress is normal.
But bullying or harassment is not something you have to tolerate.

Don’t wait in silence — speak up early.
Asking for help is a strength.

📚 Learn before you leap

Trying new things can feel scary.
But fear shrinks when you gain knowledge.

Knowledge = Confidence
Confidence = Motivation

We humans simply love discovering new things.
Even gossip proves that, right? 😆

Preparation prevents regret ✔

🌟 Final message for your motivation

So remember this:

Just Enjoy It!

Turn your everyday tasks into small joys, and let positivity boost your productivity.
You’ve got this ✨
